5th National
Pioneering Competition - Write-up
The St. Joseph’s
Pelandok Scouts took part in the biennial 5th National Pioneering Competition,
which was held at Beatty Secondary School from 27th to 28th July 2001. The
Pelandok Scouts sent in a team of 30 scouts to compete in the various
competitions: Blindman Tent Pitching, Sourgraping, Roman Cannonball, Pioneering
(Bridge) and Logging.
Our scouts did well in
the Pioneering (Bridge) and Roman Cannonball sections. In the Pioneering
(Bridge) Section, we managed to clinch the Gold medal, beating our strong
rivals, Catholic High. Our bridge had an impressive walkway of 8m and included a
hexapod and 2 hourglass towers. In addition, the scouts also built a suspended
flagpole above one of the hourglass towers. The massive bridge was also
decorated with banners, leaves and Hawaiian torches, similar to that of the
bridge in the ‘Survivor’ series.
We finished 2nd in the
Roman Cannonball event, 4th in the Blind Tent Pitching event and 6th in the
Logging and the Sourgraping events.

(306)
It was a fierce competition between 10 scout groups fighting for the honour of
the best bridge within the time limit of 9 hours. Although the minimum
specifications of the bridge was for the length to be 4m and the height to be
0.5m, our scouts did us proud by building a massive bridge of length 8m and
height 1.5m! In order to achieve this remarkable feat, they toiled under the hot
sun for many hours prior to the competition to practise. Clearly, their
determination and strength to accomplish this achievement is indeed commendable,
as many were tired and exhausted at the end of the competition.

PL Joel Chan (406) is not in the picture.
In this auxiliary event, the team surpassed our expectations when they won the
Silver medal although the team was unable to conduct any test runs as they only
modified the structure one day before the competition. Although we had come for
the experience, the team showed will and spirit to battle 8 other scout groups
to win at least a medal to go home with. We breezed past our opposition to reach
the finals. The water bomb flew a total distance of 31m, breaking the earlier
record of 26m set by them in the qualifying round.
As for the other events, although we did not manage to win anything, we could
at least leave happily, for we had done our best in the competition. Though
these teams failed to secure any of the top 3 places, the members deserve to be
applauded as they showed true fighting spirit. We gained valuable experience,
and we know that we will be back for more honours the next time the competition
is held.
We would like to thank
Mr David Kwang for his tireless effort in supporting & encouraging the boys.
Our thanks also go out to ASPLs (2001) Thang Chang King and Michael
Enriquez, PLs (2001) Virata and Daniel Kwek, QM (2001)
Marcus Png and Project Coordinator (2001) Chong Chow Wee for
contributing their valuable time in guiding their juniors.
The National Pioneering
Competition has taught many of us the importance of teamwork and support from
our peers.
