Scout Promise

Scout Promise

I promise to do my best,

To do my duty to God and

The Republic of Singapore,

To help other people, and

To keep the Scout Law.

Explanation of the Scout Promise:

  1. I PROMISE TO DO MY BEST...

  • Scouting does not expect "perfection nor does it have a set of standards to measure perfection. It however encourages every scout to try his best to live up to his own code of conduct or moral values that he believes in to become a good person.

  • We do not expect every scout to be an important person such as a President Scholar, but each scout is encouraged to build and develop himself to his fullest potential. This way a scout will be able to live a full and meaningful life, and it would prepare him for the future.

  • Scouting expects every scout to do his very best for himself and others, always testing his own limits and pushing them further, no more, no less.

  1. TO DUTY MY DUTY TO GOD...

  • There are several ways one can serve God. To begin with, one should learn as much as possible about one's religion and God's teachings. One should adhere and live up to God's teachings in one's daily life, and love others. Helping to spread His word and the work of His "church" will also be a good way to do one's duty to God as a scout.

  1. AND TO THE REPUBLIC OF SINGAPORE...

  • Being a Singaporean citizen, one would have benefited from the country's growth and progress. These achievements were the work of our forefathers and is possible only because everyone works towards the country's best interests and through the government.

  • One's duty to the country does not only lie in obeying the law's, it also means that one would have to have an interest in the nation's welfare, respond to the country's call, campaigns and serve National Service. Most importantly, one must be proud of your country and her heritage, and always aim to do the country proud.

  1. TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE...

  • There are many people around the world who need our help. However, it is not always the case that we are able to help them, yet a smile and a few kind words will usually be more than expected. Helping others would mean that one will have to make sacrifices, and it is the very act that makes it meaningful. Also, one should remember that a scout should at least do a good deed a day.

  1. TO KEEP THE SCOUT LAW.

  • The Scout Law is very different from other laws. The laws of a nation for example would usually be concerned with the "Do Not's", unlike the Scout law. The Scout Law tells a scout what one can do for the country, for others and for oneself realistically. The Scout Law does not only have the rules to the Scout movement, but they are also guidelines to lead one towards a wholesome and meaningful life. By following the Scout Law, one would be able to grow to become a true and sincere person as well as a respectable citizen of his society.
