History of 04 St. Joseph's Pelandok Scouts Group

1922

 

Singapore schools recognised the extensive role of scouting on the lives of young people and adopted it as an extra-curricular activity.

 

The 4th St. Joseph's Institution Scout Group was formed.

 

1932

 

4th St. Joseph's Institution Scout Group ceased operations.

 

1950

 

Mr. James Tseng (Pelandok), a teacher in SJI, revived the then defunct 4th St. Joseph's Institution Scout Group.

 

The Scout Group was then known as the Stamford 04 Pelandok Scout Group in SJI.

 

1953

 

Due to overwhelming interest in scouting in SJI, the Stamford 04 Pelandok Scout Group was split up, and the Stamford 03 Hippo Scout Group was formed by Brother Joseph Kiely with the help of leaders from the Pelandok Group, to meet demands. Brother Joseph Kiely was then a member of the SJI staff and an Adult Leader in the Pelandok Group.

 

1959

 

GSL James Tseng was appointed as the Assistant District Commissioner of the Stamford District.

 

1961

 

GSL James Tseng was appointed as the District Commissioner of the Stamford District.

 

1966

 

GSL James Tseng was awarded the Long Service Award by the Singapore Scout Association.

 

1974

 

GSL James Tseng was awarded the Superior Service Award by the Singapore Scout Association.

 

1976

 

VSL Felix Li was appointed as the Assistant District Commissioner for the Stamford District.

 

1982

 

VSL Felix Li was appointed the District Commissioner of the Kallang District.

 

3 Venture Scouts from the Pelandok Scout Group received the President Scout Award at the Istana.

 

1983

 

VSL Felix Li served as the Head of Programme for the Impeesa Camp, held in the Sarimbun Scout Camp from 8 - 14 June, which was held to welcome the new Chief Scout, President C V Devan Nair.

 

Other Adult Scout Leaders of the Pelandok Group were also actively involved in the camp.

 

1984

 

VSL Felix Li was appointed the Deputy National Training Commissioner of the Singapore Scout Association, and was also awarded the Chief Scout's Commendation.

 

1989

 

Venture Scouts from the Pelandok Scout Group completed a gruelling 3 day canoeing expedition around Singapore island in June.

 

SL Bernard Yeo was appointed the Assistant District Commissioner of the Bukit Timah District.

 

1990

 

VSL Felix Li was appointed the National Commissioner of International Relations.

 

One patrol from the Pelandok Scout Group participated in the National Jamboree (25 - 80), which commemorated the 25 years of Singapore's Independence and the 80 years of Scouting in Singapore. It was held at Sarimbun Scouts Camp.

 

ACSL Chiok Peck Kee of the Pelandok Scout Group was a member of the Reception  Sub-Committee and the Campfire Sub-Committee of the National Camp.

 

Two of Pelandok Scout Group's Auxillary Leaders were the Masters-of-Ceremony for the dinner held for the celebration of the 80 years of scouting in Singapore organised by the Singapore Scout Association. VSL Felix Li was a member of the Main Organising Committee. The Group was represented by 18 Leaders and their spouses at the dinner.

 

VSL Felix Li was one of the six delegates who participated in the 31st World Scout Conference held in Paris, France.

 

As a result of SJI becoming an independent school and the reduced intake of students, the school committee decided to merge the 2 scout groups in SJI. Since then , the St. Joseph's Pelandok Scout Scouts have again operated under the original name of St. Joseph's Pelandok Scout Group.

 

Venture Scouts from the Pelandok Scout Group successfully scaled to the summit of Mt. Kinabalu, Sabah (South-East Asia's highest peak at 13, 450 ft above sea level)

 

St. Joseph's Pelandok Scout Group played hosts to 4 Thai Scouts during the 1st Singapore -Thailand Scout Exchange Programme in December. SL Anthony Phey was appointed the programme coordinator for the Thai Boy Scouts.

 

1991

 

SL Anthony Phey was appointed the Assistant District Commissioner for the Kallang District.

 

VSL Felix Li was appointed the Acting Chief Commissioner in the Singapore Scout Association.

 

St. Joseph's Pelandok Scouts and the Adult leaders played an important role in organising the programme for H. M. King Carl Gustaf XVI of Sweden when H. M. visited Singapore as the Honourary President of the World Scout Foundation and Patron of the Baden Powell World Fellowship. Acting Chief Commissioner Felix Li and ADC/SL Anthony Phey both served on the Organising Committee for H. M. visit as the Chairman and Secretary respectively.

 

17 scouts (the largest number of scouts from a single scout group) from the St. Joseph's Pelandok Scout Group participated the 17th World Scout Jamboree held in Mount Sorak, South Korea.

 

1992

 

St. Joseph's Pelandok Scout Group celebrated its 70th Anniversary with a series of special events such as the Group Campfire, an Anniversary Dinner at the Westin Stamford Hotel, an expedition to the Berkellah Falls in Malaysia, and the unveiling of the new Group Badge.

 

Former VSL Felix Li was appointed as the 5th and youngest Chief Commissioner of the Singapore Scout Association.

 

In July, Mr. James Tseng (a.k.a. Pelandok) and Chief Commissioner Felix Li both received the Distinguished Service award (the Singapore Scout Association's highest award). ADC/SL Anthony Phey also received the Meritorious Service Award from the Chief Scout, President Wee Kim Wee.

 

ADC/SL Anthony Phey was one of the 13 delegates from Singapore who participated in the 17th Asia-Pacific Regional Scout Conference in Jakarta, Indonesia. Chief Commissioner Felix Li was appointed to serve in the Asia-Pacific Regional Scout Committee of the World Scout Bureau at the conference.

 

Mrs. Tan Meng Lang, one of St. Joseph's Pelandok Scout Group's Assistant Scout Leaders received the Long Service Award from the Singapore Scout Association.
