Sections
of Scouting in Singapore
Introduction:
Scouting in Singapore consists of 4 major sections which is the
Cadet Scout Section,
the
Scout Section, the
Venture Section,
and the Rover Section.
It is one of the many other Uniformed Group Organisations (UGOs)
offered as Co-Curricular Activities for student to join. The other
UGOs are the National Cadet Corps (NCC), the National
Police Cadet Corps (NPCC), the Boys and Girls Brigades, St. John's
Ambulance Brigades, Red Cross Brigades, and Military Bands, just to
name a few. Scouting is the only Uniformed Group Organisation, other
than those in military units, which has the privilege to have the
National Colours (Code of Arms) on the uniforms. If a scout is
heading abroad for international or regional activities and events,
like Jamborees, he is allowed to wear the Miniature National Flag
above his left pocket.
Cadet Scout Section:
This is the youngest section of scouts in Singapore and is
equivalent to cub scouting in other countries. Under this
section, cadet scouts are taught to build up different types of
interest and hobbies. They are also taught basic rope-work, national
loyalty, and many other skill, character and interest developing
things. A training camp, known as the Sixers Training Camp (STC), is
organized for them once a year. It is a 3 days 2 nights affair with
the scouts camping out in the A-Shaped huts at Sarimbun Scout Camp
usually in mid-year or holidays period. After the camp, they may be
selected to lead their sadet scout units as sixers or assistant
sixers. Cadet scouts generally range from 7 to 13 years of
age.

Scouts Section:
This is the Second Stage of Scouting in
Singapore. This is the also the largest section of scouts in
Singapore. It is normally based in schools in the secondary level,
but there are some scout groups which operate as open groups.
They are taught National Loyalty , First Aid , Responsibility and
Exploration, etc. After a scout has gone through approximately 2
years of conditioning and training, he will have to attend a Patrol
Leader Training Camp (PLTC) to prepare him to help in leading the
Scout Unit. After completing this camp successfully, the
returning Scout will go back to his respective scout unit and be
assigned a post to have a chance to lead in the unit.
The scouts generally range from 13 to
18 years of age.

This is the most prestigious stage of
Scouting in every country. A venture in Singapore will not be
working towards his King's Scout but towards our own, President's
Scout Award. They are to develop and use the skills of
communications, problem-solving, decision-making, self-reliance, and
are expected to participate in social, cultural and spiritual
activities, as well as challenging physical and outdoor activities.
They are expected a whole battery of tests in the above areas of
interest, and obtain the Venture Standard, and eventually move
towards the Venture Cord. After obtaining these badges, they may
work towards the President's Scout Award.

This is the smallest of all sections as most of the Scouts would

National Service. This is the transitional stage for the scouts to
work towards the Woodbadge or becoming an Auxiliary Leader. Rovers
in Singapore are strongly recommended to seek some publicly
recognized standards like Bronze Medallion from Royal Life Saving
Society, Adult first aid with Red Cross or St. John Ambulance, or a
PSA license for leisure craft. Rovers are considered as a form of
companionship to relatively new scouters who are teachers from
schools send for training in Scout Camps.

A Rover must leave the section once he
reaches 25 years of age.
